In 1961, L.H. Jeffery of Lady Margaret Hall, Oxford, published her monumental and stellar study The Local Scripts of Archaic Greece (LSAG). Until her untimely death in September 1986, she continued to gather notes, write marginalia in her copy, and often to publish such new materials. Alan Johnston had already been engaged to prepare a major supplement for LSAG from those materials; that supplement appears as an excellent 58-paged addition to the original text in this second edition. New asterisks in the original text key into the supplement, in which both Jeffery and Johnston have added important new inscriptions and notes. In 1961, LSAG was highly praised as a comprehensive scholarly study. This new edition with the very important supplement extends the usefulness of the study well into the 21st century as the handbook on epichoric archaic Greek inscriptions. An outstanding and valuable work for Greek epigraphy, philology, history, and art. Graduate level. -J. M. Balcer, The Ohio State University
