Brown (University of Glasgow) is the general editor of "The Governance of England" series; this volume follows H.R. Loyn's The Governance of Anglo-Saxon England, 500-1087 (CH, Nov'84) and W.L. Warren's The Governance of Norman and Angevin England, 1086-1272 (CH, Mar'88). Brown maintains the high standard of the previous volumes in his presentation of how the personnel and institutions of government performed their tasks. This is a splendid work of synthesis that clearly sets forth the current state of historical knowledge. In his own work Brown has made original contributions to the history of the chancery, the royal council, the privy seal office, parliament, and other agencies of governance, and he writes with the authority of a mature guide in familiar territory. Topical bibliographies inserted throughout the text, appropriate footnotes, skeletal index. Highly recommended for undergraduates, graduate students, and professors. -A. C. Reeves, Ohio University
