Summary:"Inspired by letters exchanged between a family in West Berlin and one in Bremen, Indiana, during the period between the Berlin blockade and the construction of the Berlin Wall, Kermit Berg's work "Wohlstandstraum/Nuclear Family" presents a particularly intimate picture of the connections between people from different nations against the backdrop of the Cold War. ... [T]he artist has translated the concrete experiences of his family's history into a total work of art of high aesthetic value. He combines reproductions of artifacts such as the letters and snapshots from family albums with his own texts. Incidental personal events are described in a staccato stenographic commentary, juxtaposing them with historic events of the moment. Berg artistically stages this complex interaction in contrast to powerful photographs of period design objects."--Page 74.
