Summary: | The increasing ubiquity of megacities, with their complex transport networks, poses daunting challenges both for city planners and municipal administrators--and for their overstrained budgets. However, this phenomenon also offers a real-time laboratory in which experts can attempt to identify mobility patterns that might promote energy efficiency and lower carbon emissions. In this volume, trans-disciplinary research teams collaborate with local stakeholders to develop sustainable transportation concepts for five cities across the globe: Gauteng, Hefei, Ho Chi Minh City, Hyderabad and Tehran-Karaj. The teams grapple with issues ranging from data collection and planning in ever-changing environments to the resistance of citizens to mammoth infrastructure projects. Mobility and Transportation is edited by Wulf-Holger Arndt, head of the Mobility and Space research unit at the Center for Technology and Society in Berlin and a leading authority on transportation and urban planning. |
