Written as a practical guide for health-care professionals for the treatment of anxiety and stress-related problems, Powell and Enright's book integrates theoretical and experiential material following a cognitive-behavioral approach. Theoretical models of anxiety, diagnostic classifications, assessment instruments and techniques, and therapeutic interventions are presented in a practice-oriented manner useful to health professionals and their clients. However, the volume pales in comparison to other recent treatments of the same subject in C. Barr Taylor and B. Arnow's The Nature and Treatment of Anxiety Disorders (CH, Feb'89) and R.W.J. Neufeld's Advances in The Investigation of Psychological Stress (CH, Dec'89). Case studies are a strength, but too few are provided; grammatical problems with noun-pronoun agreement and typographical errors detract from the contents. Advanced undergraduates and up. A. L.
