Summary:salt affected soils have been common feature of the landscape in arid, semiarid and coastal regions. Current assessment reveals that about 6.73 million ha productive cultivable land has gone out of cultivation because of excessive accumulation of salts in the root zone in 15 states of India. It is further assessed that if current practices remain in operation, soil salinity may engulf about 19.0 million ha area by 2050.
