The most complete and useful guide to research on William Byrd to date. Nearly every feature possible for aid to researchers has been provided by Turbet (University of Aberdeen), with ample means of access through indexes. Included are the only comprehensive catalog of Byrd's works ever published, an equally comprehensive bibliography and checklist of critical works, another of biographical sources, a selective discography, a dictionary of people and places associated with Byrd, and suggestions for future research projects. Materials from the 1923 Byrd tercentenary have been included in a special section, as have texts of some important hitherto unpublished documents, in appendixes. The emphasis throughout is on the location of information, rather than the repetition of previously published material, but discussions and annotations are scholarly, critical, and informative, which should be invaluable to students in making their choice of sources. The value of the work is further enhanced by indexes to authors, conferences, festschriften, and periodicals cited in the volume. A potentially valuable source for collections in music history, as well as cultural history in general.-E.B. Pollard, University of Alabama in Huntsville
