In the earlier edition of this work (CH, Mar'85), Falk had used hundreds of Goldman's personal letters, particularly those written to her lover/associate Ben Reitman, to examine the interconnection between her love life and her public persona. The current book tightens the focus by eliminating repetitive personal correspondence and adding helpful historical analysis. The result is a provocative portrait of this fascinating radical leader. Goldman's vulnerability in love relationships contrasts with her daring and bravado in political ideology and personal safety. Issues of sexuality, gender, and individual self-realization, as well as radical politics, are illuminated in this impressionistic biography of an anarchist and feminist giant. Highly recommended to all libraries interested in women's studies and/or radical politics. L. Mayo County College of Morris
