Summary:Inge Fey, Head of Elmlea Infants School in Bristol, believes firmly in recognising the talents of her staff. Alongside assessing their training needs, she also asks staff to state curriculum areas where they feel particularly confident. The leadership team collates this data and is then able to match up staff to share their skills and train each other. In this programme, LSA Karen Geddes shows other LSAs how to run a music and movement session to help young children with handwriting. Class teacher Claire Clohosey shares her experiences of introducing philosophy to pupils with her colleagues. This is a school where the teachers learn alongside their pupils.
Backwell School in Bristol offers staff a range of CDP courses, keeping them updated with what's on offer through an in-house newsletter. One of the courses available teaches coaching skills, which come in useful for drama teacher Pam Gregory when she's asked by a colleague for help with a problem class. In the science department, staff are investigating possible resources and locations away from school for use in classroom lessons or as sites for field trips. Zoe Bell attends an open evening for teachers at a hands-on science museum, where she gets to try out exciting new resources available for use in schools. Head of Science Brian Kemplay visits Bristol University's Botanical Garden to see if a field trip here would aid his Year 12 biologists.Head of CPD Isobel Clark describes how the school encourages and supports staff using their initiative in order to maintain their own professional development.
