The Mutual Assurance Company, known as the Green Tree for its emblem, was established in 1784 in reaction to the Philadelphia Contributionship's refusal to insure houses with nearby trees. It received its charter in 1786.
The illustration is a woodcut of a tree, signed: T. The same woodcut, somewhat worn, is used on a page-by-page (though not line-by-line) reprint of the deed bearing the imprint "Printed by F. & R. Bailey, No. 116 High-Street" beneath the tree. The firm of Francis & Robert Bailey was active from 1795 to 1802. A copy of the present work at the Library Company of Philadelphia has a MS. note dated 1794.
