To the Honorable the justices of the Court of General Sessions of the Peace, to be holden at Biddeford, within and for the county of York, on the second Tuesday of November, 1799. Humbly shew, The subscribers, inhabitants and freeholders in said county, southerly of Great Ossipee-River,-- That the delay of justice in the supreme judicial court, having but one term in a year, and being confined to one week, cannot have time to get through more than half the business of the county in that week,-- has become a great grief as well as inconvenience to the county:-- That having two supreme courts to be established and holden in this county in the same year in future, one at York and the other at Alfred, would satisfactorily accommodate the inhabitants of this county at large:-- Therefore we pray that a new gaol house may be erected and built in Alfred, aforesaid, as soon as may be, at the expence of this county, for the benefit and accommodation of the inhabitants thereof; that place being near the centre of the territory of this county;-- and when there shall be one supreme judicial court holden there, it will be necessary to have a gaol house in that place. And in duty bound will ever pray. September 19, 1799.
