Castner writes "for anyone who has the desire to visit a rainforest for whatever reason." Half travel guide, half bibliography, this book can serve many purposes with its practical information on tourist facilities and biological research stations and its extended list of resources for both travelers and scholars. Castner concentrates on the Central and South American countries he knows best--Peru, Ecuador, French Guiana, Venezuela, Trinidad, Costa Rica, and Panama--in offering specifics on where to visit, who to contact, and how to do your homework (whether you're a tourist or a researcher). He then offers an overall rain forest bibliography, which includes books, guides, journals, magazines, maps, tourist information centers, scientific organizations/institutions, and conservation organizations. For the academically minded, there are lists of the top tropical biologists and sources of funding. An extensive, thoughtfully organized, multipurpose book. --Denise Perry Donavin
