A portrait and a self-portrait of Primo Levi in a series of dialogues between the late scientist and writer and fellow Italian author Camon. These interviews extended from 1982 until 1986 (just before Levi's death) and are presented in a text corrected by Levi himself. The result is a succinct and compelling outline of Levi's interests and ideas that brings both his mind and personality into sharp focus. The Holocaust and Levi's wartime experiences necessarily occupy much attention, but Levi has some intriguing thoughts on the emotional and spiritual aftermath of that period and on current Jewish-Arab relations in Israel, as well as some opinions on the scientist's occupation. A suitable companion to the recent collections of Levi's writing in Mirror Maker: Stories and Essays [BKL S 1 89]. --John Brosnahan
