Composed as quartets based on the number of contrapuntal lines, rather than number of instruments. Hence, the keyboard provides two of these lines.
Both quartets have pencil annotations (brackets and various fully notated phrases) to indicate a cello part. These were added later by an unknown hand--From introduction.
