John Macquarrie, distinguished emeritus professor of divinity, Oxford University, provides in this volume substantial treatment of christology, the study of Jesus Christ, his person and work. The first chapter clarifies the issues in the current discussion of christology, and the Macquarrie moves directly to the development of classical christology through the biblical witness to its culmination in the Nicene and Chalcedonian Creeds. A second section examines the Enlightenment and post-Enlightenment critique of classical christology and this period's attempts at reconstruction. In the third and final section, Macquarrie develops his own systematic and constructive christological position, one rooted in acknowledging the full humanity of Jesus. He defends this position by accepting the fact that the zeitgeist of our age demands it and that it is the original path in the earliest days of Christianity. There is no shortage of books about Jesus and the theological understanding of his life and work. But few are as thoughtful, balanced, scholarly, and thorough as this one. Macquarrie's writing is clear, although the content remains difficult for the uninitiated. Recommended for seminary and university libraries. -D. S. Ferguson, Alaska Pacific University
