The first segment of a planned three-volume translation of the Exegetisches Worterbuch zum Neuen Testament. As a guide to the usage of New Testament words, including every proper name, the basic arrangement is alphabetical with words related by root and meaning usually treated together with cross-reference from each word's normal alphabetical location. For each word there is a transliteration, declension information for nouns and adjectives, definition, identification and discussion of all or most NT occurrences, and a bibliography, which includes books, reference works, and journal articles in several languages. An English index is to appear in Volume 3. Acknowledging its debt to the Theological Dictionary of the New Testament (CH, Dec'85) the Exegetical Dictionary (EDNT) has more recent scholarship. Protestant and Roman Catholic exegetes from various countries (with emphasis on scholars from German-speaking and European countries) have written for EDNT. All major articles are signed; those unsigned are the responsibility of the editors. The introduction to Volume 1 is followed by a list of contributors (name and city), abbreviations (including 7 pages of "Modern Writings"), and a transliteration scheme. Though knowledge of New Testament Greek is necessary to get the fullest value from this work, a great amount of useful information can be gained even without this knowledge. Most appropriate for seminary libraries, libraries serving graduate programs in religion, and libraries in colleges or universities offering a course in New Testament (Koine) Greek. -D. This work treats every word (though not all occurrences) in the Greek New Testament. All articles include standard lexical data, significant occurrences, and meaning--determined with emphasis on grammatical and theological context. Longer articles are accompanied by bibliographies and provide extensive discussion of the word (or word group) divided into sections emphasizing its importance to particular New Testament books or writers. Although there will be an English index in the third volume, thus making the dictionary accessible to those with little or no knowledge of Greek, many of the scholarly, complex articles will be difficult for nonspecialists. Specialists will find this dictionary thorough and up to date. Highly recommended for religious studies collections.--Craig W. Beard, Harding Univ. Lib., Searcy, Ark. (c) Copyright 2010.
