Baker's purpose is to provide a comprehensive and briefly annotated bibliography of publications concerning endangered animals and to cite references concerning the natural history of these creatures. The Official World Wildlife Fund Guide to Endangered Species of North America (CH, Sep'90) covers some of the same material, but Baker's bibliography is international in scope and includes a wider range of publications. The criteria for inclusion are publication date 1981-1988, endangered vertebrate as the primary or secondary subject, named authors or editors, articles at least two pages in length, entire text or abstract in English, and adult reading level. Sources for citations are books, technical reports, monographs, symposia, journal and magazine articles, government documents, and dissertations. This bibliography is split into several sections. The introduction is a valuable guide to doing research in this area. The cites are divided into general sources, specific sources (mammals, birds, amphibians and reptiles, fishes), and addenda. The appendix lists names and serial publications of organizations concerned with endangered species. Indexes include common name, scientific name, author, and geographic area. Intended users are upper-division undergraduates, graduate students and faculty, and well-informed general readers. Few of Baker's references will be found in a typical college or public library, but the bibliography is appropriate for any collection willing to handle the interlibrary loan requests this source will generate. -W.
