This volume represents an attempt by the authors to provide a listing of all known generic and subgeneric names for both living and extinct snakes. The names are in alphabetical order, with references between invalid (of which there are many) and valid names; disputed names are so noted. Each of the valid names is followed by a brief bibliographic record of the first article describing the particular genera. Complete bibliographic records for these citations are found in the main bibliography at the end of the book. This list is based in part on that compiled by zoologist A.S. Romer in his 1956 Osteology of the Reptiles; it has been greatly expanded, with the useful addition of cross-references. This is the first volume of a major descriptive work on the snakes of the entire world; in the introduction, the authors write that the next volume planned will be a synopsis of living and extinct snake species. Recommended for zoology libraries and other academic libraries that support strong programs in reptile zoology and taxonomy. For these libraries, it would be extremely useful; for others, it is probably a bit specialized. -S. H. Barringer, Trinity University
