Today one of every six couples who wish to have a child is unable to conceive. Among the many contributing factors are maternal age, gynecological health, paternal health problems, and incidence of venereal disease. This exemplary overview of the causes, potential cures, and psychosocial ramifications of infertility provides an excellent source of background material for infertile couples and others interested in what is a very hot health topic. The author, who is the founder of a self-help group for infertile couples, begins with discussions of the male and female reproductive systems and then moves on to how to select a physician to treat infertility and what to expect during a physical examination and testing. Succeeding chapters on treatment, new technology, and miscarriage are straightforward and clinically sound. Menning sensibly and sensitively counsels that infertility needs to be dealt with like any other life crisis involving grief or loss. Highly recommended for health collections.
