An excellent resource--especially for beginners and would-be hairsplitters--for summaries of most major library technologies, systems, and terms. Soper and colleagues define words and concepts germane to all types of librarianship in conceptual context (i.e., under subject headings such as "bibliographic standards," "physical form," "assigned access points" in the chapter "Bibliographies and bibliographic control"). The names of specific equipment in widespread use (e.g., the Gaylord circulation system) are included in their purview. The table of contents is faceted, rather like a classification schedule instead of a conventional list of chapters, and an index gives access to particular terms. ~--Patrick Dewey
