Review by Booklist Review
Cohen, for many years a teacher and adviser in postgraduate medical education, reports on his interviews with 52 male and female resident doctors, all white, from a variety of medical specialties. The interviewees frankly discuss their professional, social, and family problems, including the lack of training in physician- patient family relationships and the early pressure for specialization. The author concludes with a thoughtful summary and practical recommendations for improvement of the system, stating his strong belief that too much emphasis is placed on research and that more time should be devoted to good teaching. Medical personnel at any level and laypersons will benefit from reading this realistic book. Glossary; no index. WKB.
