A highly readable book on dreams that tries to explain why we dream, with excellent coverage of the current status of research, which Koulack then applies to relevant Freudian and Jungian concepts on dreaming. This is one of the few books that takes a factual approach when discussing supporting data for the psychoanalytical viewpoint of dreaming. He discusses research on factors known to affect dreaming and the sleep cycle, such as exercise, alcohol and drugs, sleep deprivation, illness, and environmental stimuli. Other chapters deal with research related to the Freudian concepts of stress, anxiety, and failure to recall and their application to dream life. Koulack also includes a chapter on historical perspectives. A bibliography, organized by chapters, contains more than 200 references. A handy book for those who want an overview of ongoing research in this area. Recommended for both general readers and college audiences.
