Lane's book is an odd sociological treatment of the life and times of the Allied merchant seaman during WW II. This book in no respects has the significance of John Winton's Convoy (London, 1983). Lane's work is a potpouri of merchant seamen's experiences aboard various noncombatant ships, with an emphasis on the tramp steamer. The topics, in no really logical sequence, cover food, race relations, mutiny, shipwreck, working conditions, and many others. Much of the book is based on more than 100 interviews with WW II sailors. There is a four page, secondary-source bibliography. The glossary is inadequate for the range of topics addressed. Not especially authoritative. -B. H. Groene, Southeastern Louisiana University
