Winslow Homer, Howard Pyle, and Norman Rockwell are among the 42 illustrators included in this volume--a fairly representative selection, but more selective than one would expect in this series. The editors do not explain why they chose some of the more obscure artists--journeymen who supplied pictorial content for magazines and newspapers on demand and were neither invited nor expected to develop a personal style. Whether highly regarded or largely ignored, all these artists are accorded brief critiques and full biographies, sometimes based on original research, but often on secondary scholarship easily available elsewhere. Recommended for research libraries with strong holdings in the book arts or art history. J. Bidwell Princeton University
