Summary:This monograph "examines the ways in which an offender's body (corpus rei) was tortured for political or military crimes, or for engaging in activity aimed at subverting the established balance of power, in specific historical and geopolitical contexts in the ancient world. Through a close reading of individual cases found in the sources examined, a recurring correspondence appears to emerge between the way the offender was punished (the nature of the sentence-punishment and the type of tormenta associated with it) and the wrongful conduct of which he was guilty ..."--Abstract.
