If a library could possess only one book on the Russo-Japanese War, it should be this one. It is scholarly and provides some fresh interpretations, yet it is well-written and concise. Westwood makes especially strong use of Russian-language sources. Although six of the book's nine chapters deal with the conflict itself, the first and second chapters skillfully portray the diplomatic and strategic origins and background of the war, and a final chapter discusses the Treaty of Portsmouth and its reception in both Russia and Japan.
