Milbrath argues that as inhabitants of the earth's global village, we are at war with nature and the environment, and must alter our life-styles and attitudes to end the conflict and restore peace. Milbrath (director of the research program in environment and society and professor of political science at SUNY--Buffalo) has written The Washington Lobbyists (1963), Political Participation (1965), The Politics of Environmental Policy (1975), and Environmentalists, Vanguard for a New Society (CH, Mar'85). Envisioning a Sustainable Society is really a handbook to "improve and hasten social learning" about environmental issues and to stimulate a "collective wake up" to ensure that society "take corrective action." As current as a daily newscast, Envisioning is a sobering call for the earth's population to halt pollution now; failure to do so will have dire consequences for "the living earth." Those who rally each year to celebrate Earth Day will find additional motivation for their convictions in Milbrath's book. P. D. Travis Midwestern State University
