A highly intellectual work by Torretti, an author well versed in physics and mathematics as well as in philosophy. The book is both far reaching and penetrating in that it discusses with acute insight and depth the conceptual foundations of physics--both the theoretical and observational--and their relationship to mathematics. The level is high; consequently, the book is only suitable for graduate and upper-division undergraduate students as well as faculty. The quality of the bibliography, index, and references corresponds to the scholarly level. This well-written book contains original contributions to philosophical thought and is therefore strongly recommended as an acquisition for academic libraries. C. H. McGruder III Fisk University
