Despite their importance, Francophone transatlantic exchanges have not received the same critical attention as have Anglophone transatlantic connections. France and the Americas: Culture, Politics, and History: A Multidisciplinary Encyclopedia, ed. by Bill Marshall (CH, Jan'06, 43-2578), which Gilbert (George Mason Univ.) and Santoro (Georgetown Univ.) mention, covers the link between France and the US but does not treat other Francophone European countries or Quebec in depth (though some entries tackle relations between France and Canada). In sum, Transatlantic Passages is the fist volume of this scope to be published. The volume's 25 essays are divided into five sections: these cover women's history and transatlantic passages; the influence of the culture of Europe on Quebec writers; theater; the work of immigrants from Francophone Europe to Quebec; and contemporary art and popular culture. The editors and contributors provide interdisciplinary critical articles and creative works that reveal the richness of the literary, cultural, and artistic exchanges between these two areas. Summing Up: Recommended. All readers. E. A. Vanborre Gordon College
