Anyone interested in Flaubert will enjoy reading the articles in this well-edited encyclopedia. They are engagingly written and thorough and reflect an intimate acquaintance with Flaubert's life and work. The contributors, all well-known scholars, reflect on his published and unpublished works, on all the major and some of the minor characters, on the contemporary events echoed in Flaubert's works, on his family and on the friends and acquaintances who influenced his work, on his literary precursors, and on some of the writers he influenced. There are also excellent articles on strictly literary topics such as his stylistic devices and themes. A well-developed and clearly written article by Porter outlines the major critical approaches, past and current, to Flaubert's work. The entries are followed by a selected bibliography that includes audiovisual, computerized, and print materials, as well as lists of bibliographies, biographies, major editions, critical studies, and English translations. A serviceable index rounds out a volume that belongs in all institutions with programs in French and world literature. E. Sartori emerita, University of Nebraska--Lincoln

Though the emphasis is on Flaubert's works, there are also entries for some characters, critics, historical events, literary influences, and places.
