Books on educational leadership are often detached from the practicalities of managing a school. This cannot be said of Dubin's new volume. The many years Dubin (San Francisco State Univ.) spent as an administrator and professor are evident in the insightful and probing questions he poses. Topics range from the minute details of heading a school with over 1,000 students, to the pressures placed on new principals from parents and policy makers. It is through these many narratives that the reader can see the vision of educational leadership Dubin seeks. In his own words: "The principal makes the decisions that affect people's lives, directs considerable sums of money, creates a climate that impacts the community, and projects the appropriate philosophy and practical vision that propels a school forward. The principal, in essence, is a critical player in balancing and promoting the progress of our society." This volume will make an outstanding addition to the libraries of scholars interested in the vital role principals play in educational reform, and it will prove to be an invaluable teaching resource in the training of principals.
