Current world conditions may incline religious travelers to substitute Turkey and Greece as travel destinations for Israel. These countries (along with the Greek Islands and Cyprus, which are also included in this guidebook) have a rich biblical heritage. Claiming that this is "a historical, biblical, and archaeological guide" to the biblical sites in these lands, religious studies scholars Fant and Mitchell (Fant is also the author of The Misunderstood Jesus) have succeeded in presenting a comprehensive and scholarly study of the key biblical sites in the two countries. As in the "Blue Guide" series, an entry for each site (e.g., Pergamum) includes information on location, history, and biblical significance, as well as a site visit with walking directions. The text is amply illustrated with photographs and site maps, while the index lists both biblical and modern-day place names. The supplemental material includes area maps, charts, a glossary, a list of places mentioned in the Bible, and historical time lines. At once authoritative and accessible to the general reader, this book is a keeper, especially in public libraries as it is intended for lay readers.-Ravi Shenoy, Naperville P.L., IL (c) Copyright 2010.
