White (Univ. of California, Berkeley) and Folkens (Looks Legal, Forensic Image Production and Analysis) previously coauthored Human Osteology (2nd ed., CH Oct'00, 38-1024), the leading text in the field. Used widely in classes and for help in identifying bony elements in lab and field situations, it has received high praise for the excellent photographic illustrations by Folkens. One would expect a new title to offer different text even if many of the same illustrations were used. The preface suggests that the smaller format makes this volume better suited for use in field situations. However, the text is the same as before, with slight repackaging of some chapters and deletion of the excellent case studies. New elements are the scale included on the endpapers and a good number of recent references. A far better course would have been to accurately label this work as a slightly revised second edition, or to make it into a really different book with additional illustrations to show variations, rather than just an average individual. Field workers and libraries that do not own Human Osteology may wish to consider this less expensive book, if cost or format is a consideration. ^BSumming Up: Optional.
