This annotated bibliography is an outcome of the author's interest in Japanese women writers, which was acquired while teaching a course on the history of modern Japan for Appalachian State University. The bibliography is in three parts: Heian period (794-1185) writings (13 titles); fiction from the 19th century through 1987 (209 titles); and nonfiction for the same period (361 titles). In each part, works are arranged alphabetically by the last name of the author and then by original Japanese title when known, or by the translated title. The scope of the bibliography, as stated in the preface, includes works originally written either in English or in other languages. It also includes works in collections and periodical articles. In the introduction the author lists the themes of Japanese women's writings. Annotations are descriptive and include comments on the lives of the authors. Annotations are short, but long enough to indicate subject. The bibliography covers a long period and varied authors. Index and listings of specialized works by Japanese women. Recommended for students at any level interested in reading works by Japanese women. -H. Ikehara, emeritus, Eastern Michigan University
