In the fall of 1988 Lester Korn resigned his post as U.S. ambassador to the United Nations to return to Korn-Ferry International, the firm that he cofounded in 1969 and that eventually became the largest executive-recruiting firm in the world. Korn's experience in locating talent for and placing executives in a host of major firms makes it clear that he knows what corporation management is looking for in its higher- level executives. Special chapters are devoted to women, job changers, and those who face barriers of one kind or another in their current positions. Korn tells how to deal with executive recruiters-- headhunters-- and how to ask for and evaluate salary offers. His book is aimed at upper-level management and those looking for the fast track to those summits. Index. DAR.

Review by Kirkus Book Review

Authoritative, down-to-earth counsel on how to succeed in business. Drawing on his experiences as a principal of Korn/Ferry International, which ranks among the world's largest executive recruiters, the author offers a wealth of pointers on what it takes to scale the corporate heights. While much of Korn's advice to aspiring ladder climbers is either unsurprising or self-evident, he dispenses it in well-organized and effective fashion. Whether directing the career-minded to define their goals, work hard, be prepared when opportunity knocks, maintain a high profile, get involved in civic affairs, eschew rÉsumÉ embellishment, or take prudent risks, moreover, the name-dropping author invariably has an anecdote illustrating how the recommended course of action has paid off for someone now atop the organizational heap. Substantive as well as slick, the text also provides detailed data on six-figure salary scales, industries offering fast-track advancement chances, and related matters, plus insights on how to spot sinking ships that should be avoided or abandoned. There's even a separate section that briefs ambitious women on the realities of getting ahead in a milieu still dominated by seldom-divorced white family men in their early 50's. Last but not least, Korn includes an informative rundown on how executive recruiters actually conduct their talent hunts--and create job openings when matches are made. Savvy, accessible guidance for the upwardly mobile from a pro who knows the territory. Copyright ©Kirkus Reviews, used with permission.
