Review by Library Journal Review

Not just another collection of nature writing, this stimulating and useful volume reprints reviews of important works on environmental issues and excerpts from these works, linking them together with sensitive essays by editor Mills. The books discussed range from Aldo Leopold's classic Sand County Almanac to George Orwell's The Road to Wigan Pier ; the authors run the gamut from Rachel Carson to E.O. Wilson and Stephen J. Gould, plus lesser known but erudite writers on pollution and environmental problems. In addition to the works covered in detail, another 100 are briefly annotated. This compilation of critical material on varied topics is an excellent resource for high school and college teachers of biology, ecology, or environmental issues.-- Katharine Galloway Garstka, Intergraph Corp., Huntsville, Ala.
