Summary:In April 2011 a New York Times headline announced, ""Numbers of Children of Whites Falling Fast."" As it turns out, that year became the first time in American history that more minority babies than white babies were born. The concept of a ""minority white"" may instill fear among some Americans, but William H. Frey, the man behind the demographic research, points out that demography is destiny, and the fear of a more racially diverse nation will almost certainly dissipate over time. Through a compelling narrative and eye-catching charts and maps, eminent demographer Frey interprets and expound.

Though the topic of the continuing population make-up in the United States is not new, an update of current patterns is required. Frey (Brookings) filled the gap with this publication, which is not only refreshing and welcome but contains profound explanations of the inevitable demographic transformations that are yet to come. Frey's analysis is solidly backed by statistical facts derived from the latest Census counts. Unexpected surprises are found in the pages of this important contribution. Noteworthy is the chapter dealing with future presidential results that will frame a different and irreversible America. It will be younger, less white, and certainly more balanced in its diversification among different ethnic groups. Geographically, too, the varied population will be found dispersed among a greater number of areas within the country. Moreover, these distributions will also be located in significantly increasing numbers in suburban communities. This edition explains the significant importance of the forthcoming dynamic population shift in the country. Notable are the number of graphs and maps, some in color, that fully complement the material in the text. Summing Up: Highly recommended. Upper-division undergraduates through faculty. --Leon Yacher, Southern Connecticut State University
