With this book, readers may obtain the latest information about the shorebirds of Australia, which, according to the publisher, represent about 10 percent of Australian birds. The volume includes good color plates and up-to-date distribution maps. The preface gives a brief history of bird watching in Australia. The first four chapters discuss basic aspects of taxonomy, migration, breeding, and feeding ecology, emphasizing those species found in Australia. Chapters 5 and 6 describe the topography and plumages of shorebirds and shorebird species found in Australia, respectively. Additionally, Geering (Queensland Wader Study Group) and coauthors describe threats to shorebirds in Australia and the East Asian-Australasian Flyway and conservation actions taken.
