This is a book aimed at fairly serious stargazers, even though the tone and some chapters seem suited for beginners. The opening chapters remind the reviewer of a "how to" book before Coe launches into more intermediate material. To the author's credit, he admits that this book is not truly meant for beginners. He does offer a section recommending other resources at the end and some binocular-viewable targets, but the majority of this work is aimed at individuals owning larger telescopes. If readers meet this criterion, there are abundant resources for finding extragalactic objects, advice for making more formal and careful observations, and examples of the types of diagrams non-artists can easily craft while making observations. Much of this information will be redundant for individuals with their own Dobsonian telescopes, but one never knows when an intermediate-level user has a glaring hole in his or her technique; this book can help plug such a hole. Summing Up: Recommended. Professionals and practitioners. --David John Van Domelen, Amarillo College
