Estupinyà, a science journalist, has produced an accessible, entertaining review of a wide range of topics related to human sexuality. The author elucidates the complexities of interactions among endocrine function, the autonomic nervous system, and the physiology of sexual response in both human and nonhuman species. Key elements of theories of the evolution of human sexual nature are summarized, and typical sexual function problems are briefly discussed. The author examines diverse psychosociocultural contexts for sexuality, with topics that include bars, wheelchairs, swingers, sadomasochistic clubs, pornography, and coupled relationships. Each topic is discussed in light of the historical and current research of neuroscientists, primatologists, psychologists, sexologists, Kinsey Institute scientists, and medical professionals and is further illuminated by the author's personal anecdotes, observations, and interviews with scientists and scholars. The major strengths of this publication are Estupinyà's interesting writing style and his ability to render transparent the dense and obscure. Summing Up: Recommended. Lower- and upper-division undergraduates; general readers. --Pat Lefler, Bluegrass Community & Technical College
