The information reported in this book was collected by a 17-member Institute of Medicine committee, which commissioned papers, held public hearings and panel meetings, and conducted site visits. The resulting report, requested by the US Congress, indicates that the quality of medical care for Medicare enrollees could be improved; that the current system of assessing and assuring quality is not very effective and has some serious unintended consequences; and that some still-untested assessment innovations are now emerging as a basis for a more comprehensive system for Medicare quality assurance. No comprehensive bibliography is provided, although each chapter has its own bibliography. Because the book provides a lot of detail on a narrow subject (i.e., quality assurance for elderly Medicare patients), it is most appropriate for libraries with specialized collections in public health, health policy, and quality assurance. -M.
