Norman Fassett's Manual of Aquatic Plants (1940) became a classic and was used by two generations of botanists, but nomenclatural and other changes suggested a great need for extensive revision. Crow (Univ. of New Hampshire) and Hellquist (Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts) have admirably filled this need by revising and expanding the range of Fassett's Manual, which now treats all vascular wetland and aquatic species from Minnesota to Missouri east to Newfoundland and Virginia. More than 90 percent of the 1,139 species are illustrated, some of these reprinted from Fassett or other publications in addition to new ones made for the current work. Keys are included for all species; although the real value of keys cannot be determined by a brief reading of the text, they appear to be useful and clearly written and are greatly enhanced by the illustrations. A statement on geographic range, habitat, and synonymy is included for each species and a glossary and brief treatment of invasive species completes the work. Botanists and ecologists working in wetland and aquatic habitats will find this work a useful and comprehensive resource. Upper-division undergraduates and up. D. A. Lovejoy Westfield State College
