|a Academic administrator William Charles Akins was born on November 9, 1932 in Austin, Texas. He graduated from Huston-Tillotson University with his B.A. degree in history. Akins went on to receive his M.A. degree from Prairie View A&M University and an administrative certification from Southwest Texas State University. In 1959, Akins began teaching at Old Anderson High School and was recognized as Anderson's Teacher of the Year in 1963. In 1964, he was hired to be the first African American teacher at the recently-integrated Johnson High School. He worked as assistant principal at Old Anderson until it closed in 1971 due to integration. He was transferred to Lanier High School before becoming the first principal of the new L.C. Anderson High School that opened in 1973. Akins also worked in administration for the Austin Independent School District, and in 1999, the W. Charles Akins High School was named in his honor.
