|a Corporate and nonprofit chief executive Kent B. Amos was born on May 21, 1944 and raised in northwest Washington, D.C. After serving in the U.S. Army in Vietnam, he graduated from Delaware State University and was hired by Xerox Corporation, becoming the youngest corporate director in the company's history. Returning to his childhood neighborhood, Amos and his wife began fostering at-risk children. In the 1980s, he left corporate America to devote himself full time to helping families with at-risk youth. In 1991, Amos founded the nonprofit Urban Family Institute (UFI); and, in 1994, created Kids House, a safe, academically supportive after-school program. In 1998, Amos founded the Community Academy Public Charter School, where he served as chief executive officer. The Community Academy became a model for charter schools. Amos, a popular public speaker, was featured on The Oprah Winfrey Show, received numerous awards and was ordained as a deacon.
