Summary:Mayor and lawyer Freeman Robertson Bosley, Jr., the first African American mayor of St. Louis, Missouri, was born on July 20, 1954, in St. Louis. He graduated from Saint Louis University with his B.A. degree in urban affairs and political science in 1976. After receiving his J.D. degree from Saint Louis University School of Law in 1979, he worked as staff attorney for Legal Services of Eastern Missouri. In 1982, Bosley became the first African American elected to the St. Louis Circuit Clerk of Courts for the 22nd Judicial Circuit. In 1990, Bosley was elected Democratic Party Chair for St. Louis. He won the St. Louis mayoral election in 1993. As mayor, he oversaw the city's recovery from the Great Flood of 1993, orchestrated the $70 million bailout of Trans World Airlines and facilitated the move of the Los Angeles Rams to St. Louis. After serving as mayor, he practiced law until 2014.
