| Summary: | Investment manager Barbara Bowles was born in 1947, in Nashville, Tennessee. She received her B.A. degree in mathematics from Fisk University and her M.B.A. degree in finance from the University of Chicago. Bowles spent over a decade with First National Bank-- now known as Bank One-- and became the first female, African American vice president of the company. Bowles then joined the investor relations departments at Beatrice Companies and Kraft before becoming the first African American female equity manager in Chicago when she established the Kenwood Group in 1989. It has attracted many high profile clients, including Quaker Oats, Abbott Laboratories, the Field Museum and the Chicago Transit Authority. In 1996, Bowles became the first African American woman to launch a mutual fund with the debut of the Kenwood Growth and Income Fund. Bowles served on the boards of numerous professional and civic organizations.
