|a Basketball player and basketball official Charles "Sweet Charlie" Brown was born in Canton, Mississippi, on February 24, 1936. His family moved to Chicago when Brown was young. He attended Chicago's DuSable High School, where he was a member of the first all-black basketball team to go on to the Illinois state championship game, where they unfortunately lost in a close game. From there, Brown attended Seattle University, where he was a star basketball player. He carried his team to the Final Four in 1958, and was named an All-American in 1959. He played professional basketball in the AAU league with teams in Seattle and Chicago. Following a career as a community relations executive, Brown was president of the Windy City Shootout since 2005, an annual tournament for players age fifty and up. He was also served as the assignment director of referees for the Chicago Public League.
