|a Publisher Hermene Hartman was born on September 24, 1947 in Chicago, Illinois. Hartman received her Master's degree in sociology and the philosophy of education. She received her M.B.A. degree from the University of Illinois. Hartman's career began during the Civil Rights Movement while working with Reverend Jesse Jackson. She produced public service programming for WBBM-TV Chicago and taught behavioral sciences at the college level. Her move into the publishing industry came after her tenure as vice chancellor of City Colleges of Chicago. She was the first woman to serve in that capacity. In 1989, she founded N'DIGO, a local weekly newspaper that focused on black urban concerns. Hartman was known for her publisher's page which offered social commentary about African American community issues. Hartman also headed The Hartman Group, a public relations firm. She received many honors and awards for her contributions to business and African American communities.
