Summary: | Real estate owner and entrepreneur Julie Hunter was born on December 4, 1912 in Jacksonville, Florida. She became a successful businesswoman in New York who was active in charitable organizations. In 1920, Hunter tasted the thrill of performing after reciting a poem on stage. After high school, she moved to New York City where she remained. Musically talented, she worked in theaters and nightclubs as a singer beginning in 1933. After her husband, Edward Hunter, died in 1939, she stopped performing and then went to work for the U.S. Social Security Administration office in 1941. In 1950, she began to buy apartment buildings. By 1965, she opened Julie Hunter Wines and Liquors. She retired from her liquor store in 1989 but continued to operate her real estate business. Hunter's civic activities included the New York Continental Society, the Group, ABC Black Charities and the Bon Bons. Hunter passed away on October 9, 2009 at age 96. |
