Summary:College president and government appointee Leonard Haynes III was born in Boston, Massachusetts on January 26, 1947. After earning his B.A. degree from Southern University and his M.A. degree from Carnegie-Mellon University, he earned his Ph.D. from Ohio State University. While on Southern University's faculty, he was appointed executive vice president. Having taught at numerous institutions including Howard University and the University of Maryland, President George Bush appointed Haynes to a position in the U.S. Information Agency where he fostered international education relationships. After serving as president of Grambling State University, Haynes was appointed by President George W. Bush to a position with the Department of Education in 2001. Haynes consulted for numerous companies, including the Ford Foundation. He appeared in Who's Who in America. He was recipient of nine honorary degrees. In October 2007, Haynes was named executive director of the White House initiative on Historically Black Colleges and Universities.
